Citrus-scented Classic Apple Crumble Recipe

The addition of lemon juice and orange zest gives this classic crumble a delicious citrus aroma.

Recipe Ingredients

APPLE FILLING

  • 7 medium FRESHLINE golden delicious apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1 – 2 cm cubes
  • 115g SPAR castor sugar, sifted
  • 2,5ml (1/2 tsp) ground cinnamon
  • 1,25ml (1/4 tsp) ground ginger
  • juice of 1 FRESHLINE lemon
  • pinch salt
  • 5ml vanilla essence
  • 35g melted SPAR butter 

CRUMBLE TOPPING

  • 140g SPAR castor sugar, sifted
  • 285g cake flour
  • pinch salt
  • 5ml ground cinnamon
  • 90g rolled oats
  • 5ml vanilla essence
  • 225g SPAR butter, melted
  • zest of 1 FRESHLINE orange
  • zest of 1 FRESHLINE clementine

 TO SERVE

  • icing sugar
  • vanilla ice cream or cream

Recipe Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place the apple cubes, along with the remaining apple filling ingredients in a large bowl and mix to combine. Transfer to a 1.5-litre-capacity ovenproof pie dish.
  2. For the crumble topping, place the 140g caster sugar, flour, salt and cinnamon in a bowl and whisk to combine, then stir in the oats. Add the vanilla, melted butter and citrus zests and stir until just combined (there should still be some texture to the mixture, and it should have large “lumps” you don’t want to mix until a fine crumb).
  3. Spoon the crumble mixture over the apples (don’t press the crumble topping down) and place the dish on a large baking tray. Bake for 35 – 40 minutes, or until the crumble is golden and the apples are soft. Lightly dust with icing sugar and serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
