Hot Chocolate Sauce Recipe

What turns vanilla ice cream into a much loved South African dessert? Hot chocolate sauce! Try this easy and economical recipe for a large group of people.

Serves: 50 x 50 ml portions

Recipe Ingredients

  • 1,25 litres warm water
  • 1,5 litres SPAR castor sugar (1,2 kg)
  • 1,5 kg SPAR fat free milk powder (3 x 500 g packets)
  • 450 ml cocoa
  • 25 ml vanilla essence

Recipe Method

  1. Measure the water, castor sugar and milk powder into a pot. Sift the cocoa powder onto this.
  2. Stir to blend together well.
  3. Slowly bring the mixture to the boil, stirring continuously.
  4. Remove from the stove, stir in the essence, and keep warm over hot water at serving point.

Hints & Tips

  • This sauce may be made the day before, and left covered at room temperature. Reheat when required by gradually stirring in 500 ml boiling water, then replacing the bowl over hot water to keep warm.
  • Calculate how many 5 litre tubs of SPAR vanilla ice cream you need, allowing 150 ml per person.
