Buttercream Icing Recipe

This recipe will make enough buttercream icing for a one-layered cake. If you have more layers, double or triple the batch accordingly. Watch the video to learn how to achieve a stylish ombre icing effect!

To fill a one layer cake

Recipe Ingredients

  • ½ cup or 120g butter
  • 2 ½ cups or 330g icing sugar
  • 1-4 tbsp milk or cream
  • food colouring of your choice
  • Plastic food bags

  1. In a mixer, beat the butter until soft.
  2. Add the icing sugar a spatula at a time and mix well until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the milk and mix quickly to blend.
  4. You can use this icing as is or add some food colouring for an ombre effect.

To make ombre icing

  1. Add a small amount of red food colouring to your icing and mix.
  2. Take one third of the mixture and put into a small plastic bag.
  3. Add a little more food colouring to the remaining icing and mix.
  4. Take half of this mixture and place into another plastic bag.
  5. Add another small amount of food colouring and mix well.
  6. Place the remaining icing into a plastic bag.  You now have three sets of icing in three shades of pink.
