Eating a healthy and balanced diet does not have to be expensive, all you have to do is follow a few simple steps to be on your way to eating nutritious food for less!
  • Write a shopping list before you go grocery shopping. Planning your weekly meals will make writing this list much easier!
  • Do a bulk monthly shop to avoid going to the shop everyday which can result in impulse buying.
  • Choose raw and unprocessed foods if possible as these are usually cheaper, such as dry kidney and sugar beans.
  • Choose fresh vegetables and fruit that are in season and buy these items weekly to avoid spoilage and wastage. Growing your own vegetables will also help you save and the gardening will provide good exercise as well!
  • Use beans and lentils to bulk up meals when meat is scarce. These options of fulling and packed with protein. Vegetables are also a great way to bulk up one-pot meals such as stews and casseroles, or even spaghetti bolognaise and pasta bakes.
  • Opt for more affordable cuts of beef such as the flank, brisket and shin which you can use in slow cooked stews, curries or even flame grill a piece of chuck on the braai and enjoy the most tastiest and flavoursome piece of steak that you’ll ever braai!
