Travel Tips
It’s almost time for holidays! If you are travelling by car why not try a few of these ideas to make your trip a super experience.

Travel Munchies

  • Try to avoid roadside fast food places if you are on a budget or want to make healthy choices.
  • Pack snacks and drinks beforehand.
  • Water is the best drink in the car as it is healthy and does not make a mess if it spills.
  • Have a pack of SPAR wipe it - all purpose wipes lemon fresh or SPAR baby wipes in the car to keep hands clean and mop up any small spills.

Great Games to Play in the Car

Twenty Questions:
One person secretly thinks of something. The other players then take turns asking yes-or-no questions, such as "Is it alive?" or "Can you eat it?" After the players have asked 20 questions, each player gets a chance to make a guess.

The Animal Name Game:
One person names an animal. Then each person has a chance to name another animal that starts with the last letter of the previous animal named. No repeating allowed! There are no winners or losers in this game. With older children, try the game with different topics such as place names or car makes to keep it fresh and relevant.

Car Colours:
Choose a time limit such as 10 minutes, depending on the length of the drive. Have each rider make a guess about how many cars of a certain color will be spotted during that time. The person with the closest number wins. You can also do this in “sprint fashion” by using 3-minute intervals as your time limit. Whoever is closest gets a point for that time segment. The first one to 5 points wins.

Car Cricket:
The rules are simple, one person at a time comes up to ‘bat’, and they score ‘runs’ when different colour vehicles are sighted. White cars are worth one run, coloured cars are worth two runs, black cars are worth three runs. Taxis are worth four runs and trucks are worth six runs. Any vehicle towing anything collects an additional run. And red cars get you out.
For cars to count as runs they must be moving and traveling in the opposite direction. If you get one hundred runs, you retire and if you are the first to get one hundred runs, you win. If no one reaches one hundred runs, the person with the most runs win. It’s quite entertaining, if there are enough cars on the road. Have fun and good luck!

Other Car Activities:

Baking tray magnet board:
Use a new baking tray as a magnet board for young children in the car.  They can also use it to help them draw and play on with little cars or Lego blocks.

Keep a Photo Album in the car:
A simple flick through photo albums of your children, as well as family photos, makes a great distraction for younger kids while travelling.
