We’re On Safari
Let’s visit the jungles and plains of Africa for a Safari Party.
We’re On Safari

Safari Party Decorations

Jungle It Up: Use plenty of toy animals (crocs and snakes etc.) to decorate the party area. Hessian works well for a “table cloth”.  You can also use vines and leaves such as banana palms.  Just make sure you don’t use anything poisonous.  Pot plants also add atmosphere.

Animal Print Ribbon: Use animal-print ribbon to decorate glasses. Striped straws also work well. We served ‘River’ water (SPAR Squillos Chocolate Milk) and ‘Jungle’ Juice (SPAR green Cordial) to the little guests.

Animal Masks:
Can be placed on the backs of plastic chairs. These can serve as decoration, entertainment and take home gifts. Orange and green balloons can also add colour and festivity to the party area.

Safari Binoculars:
Spray toilet rolls black. Tape together and decorate with animal print ribbon.  Tie on a neck holder and you have inexpensive binoculars.

Zebra Centre Safari Cake

Serves: 20 +
Prep Time: 1 hour  Cook Time: 1 hour

Ingredients

  • 300g SPAR Butter or SPAR Brick Margarine
  • 560ml SPAR Castor Sugar
  • 6 SPAR Large Eggs
  • 1000ml SPAR Wheat Cake Flour
  • 30ml Baking Powder
  • 200ml SPAR Milk
  • 100ml Water
  • 15ml Vanilla Essence
  • Pinch of salt

Method

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. Grease and line the base of 4 x 23 cm round pans and 1 x 15 cm round pan.
  2. Cream the butter or margarine and sugar together.
  3. Add the eggs to the mixture one by one and beat well after each addition. In a separate bowl, sift flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt together. Stir into the mixture alternately with the milk, water and vanilla essence.
  4. Pour the mixture into the prepared tins and bake in the oven for approximately 20 minutes. Test with a skewer; it should come out clean when the cakes are done.
  5. Let the cakes cool for about 10 minutes and remove them from the tins. Leave the cake to cool completely before icing.

To assemble the cake:

Chocolate Icing:
  • 250g SPAR Butter
  • 750g SPAR Icing Sugar
  • 80ml Cocoa Powder
Plastic Icing:
  • 1 kg Green Plastic Icing
  • Plastic Animals
  • Ready-made Leaves, Animal foot prints etc.
Icing for waterfall and grass:
  • 150g SPAR Choice Butter
  • 400ml SPAR Icing Sugar
  • Few drops of boiling water
  • Blue and green food colouring
Method:
  1. Cream butter and icing sugar using an electric mixer until soft, fluffy and light.  Add a little boiling water if needed.  Spoon out about half a cup of icing.  Add the cocoa to turn the remaining icing into chocolate icing.
  2. Ice the 4 layer cakes together with chocolate icing. Cut the smaller cake into 3 layers horizontally and ice them together as well. Ice the top and sides of the cakes also using chocolate icing.
  3. Roll out the plastic icing and cover both cakes with it.  Place the bigger one on a sliver board or plate.  Place the smaller one on top offsetting it a little to make room for the plastic animals and waterfall.
  4. Prepare the vanilla icing in the same way as above.  Add some blue food colouring, but don’t mix it well.  Place in a piping bag fitted with a basket weave nozzle.  Use straight lines to make a cascading waterfall down the centre of the cake.  Add green colour to remaining icing.  Use a star nozzle and pipe vines and grass over the cake and board.  Position animals and decorations on the cake.
It’s better to use gel or powdered food colouring for the icing rather than water based food colouring. There are more colours to choose from and they mix better into the butter icing.
