Charity Event Honours Cancer Survivors and Raises R300 000

Cape Town | 14 October 2026
SPAR Western Cape recently hosted its annual Cancer Charity Event for women, bringing together 620 guests under the theme "Secret Garden," with beautiful décor and food.

The long-running initiative, which originated in 2008, has dedicated nearly two decades to supporting various cancer charities. This year, the event culminated in a R300 000 financial contribution to Project Flamingo, a non-profit organisation founded by oncology surgeon Dr Liana Roodt that facilitates timely, life-saving surgeries for breast cancer patients within the public health sector.

The morning served as a powerful tribute, honouring cancer survivors, those currently battling the disease, their support networks, and the "Fallen Angels" lost to the illness. Beyond cancer advocacy, the event celebrated the multifaceted nature of womanhood and integrated critical messaging surrounding the fight against gender-based violence.

Renowned media personality Saskia Falken guided the morning as MC, sharing insights from her personal cancer journey. The morning featured a poignant classical ballet performance choreographed to a rendition of "I Rise," set against a backdrop calling for an end to gender-based violence and femicide.

A central highlight of the event was an onstage interview between Saskia and Rachel Kolisi, discussing Rachel’s book, Falling Forward. The segment was introduced with a live performance by local musical talent Anica Kiana, who performed a song of the same title composed specifically for Rachel.

Reflecting on the impact of the event, Rachel Kolisi shared her appreciation for the SPAR Group’s holistic approach to corporate social investment on social media:

"For 18 years this event has brought people together around a cause that touches so many families and communities, while continuing to support the incredible work of Project Flamingo and the women they serve. What I especially appreciate about SPAR is that their commitment to women extends beyond a single event or cause. From tackling gender-based violence, to addressing period poverty, to supporting the fight against cancer, they use their platform to show up where it matters. Creating awareness is important, but turning that awareness into tangible support is where real impact happens."

At the handover to Project Flaming, Elsabe van Zyl - Felix, Sponsorship and Events Manager for SPAR Western Cape, said it was a privilege to be in a position where women can make a difference for women. “Honouring the strength, courage and beauty of women – celebrating every journey, every survivor, every fallen angel, and every life touched by cancer.
