Tips for reducing wastage

Tips for reducing wastage
Save by making food go further and last longer.
Tips for reducing wastage
  • Buy what you need or share the cost of bulk items with friends so that no food goes to waste.
  • First in, first out (or FIFO for short): When unpacking groceries, move older products to the front of the fridge/freezer/pantry and put new products in the back. This way, you’re more likely to use up the older stuff before it expires.
  • Use it all: When cooking, use every piece of food you’re cooking with, whenever possible. This is a very modern food trend – peel to stem. For example, beetroot leaves are delicious and can be used as spinach.
  • Store certain foods together: By storing apples and potatoes together, you will make them last longer. Bananas with help avocados to ripen.
  • Use up all of the jar: For example, pour warm milk into an empty jar of SPAR Squillos chocolate spread, put the lid on and shake well. The spread will melt into the milk making a delicious chocolate flavoured drink.  You can also put a little milk or oil into your SPAR mayonnaise bottle.
  • Revive limp herbs and store them: Place a sheet of SPAR paper at the bottom of a plastic container. Add a little water and arrange the herbs on top. Cover with another sheet of paper and seal.
