Farmyard Party

Farmyard Party
There are many super animal farms that make great party venues. Whether you decide to stay at home or have your party at a children’s farmyard, we have some wonderful ideas and tips for you.
Farmyard Party
  • Prep Time: 15 - 20 mins  Freezing Time: 4 – 5 hours or overnight

  • Serves: 10 - 16

Ingredients

  • 1 SPAR Freshline Chocolate Sponge Cake
  • 1 x tub SPAR Vanilla Ice-cream

Method

Super Simple Transportable Ice Cream Sandwich Cake

This ice-cream cake is specially designed to be transported to a party venue.  The sponge cake insulates the ice-cream making it easier to transport
  1. Line the base and sides of a 1 x 23 cm spring form cake tin with a few layers of SPAR cling wrap leaving some loose over the edges.
  2. Cut the sponge cake into three thin layers and use one and a half layers to line the base of the 23 cm cake tin cutting the pieces to fit in.
  3. Place the whole tub of slightly softened vanilla ice-cream on top of the sponge base. Press down until even and smooth. Pack the final layer of cake on top, fitting the half piece in to fill the gaps. Pull the cling wrap over the top and freeze until solid.
Recommended Beverage:  Serve with Squillos fruit juice blend 160 ml

To assemble The Barrel of Muddy Pigs Cake

  • 200g pink plastic icing
  • SPAR Icing Sugar to roll
  • Chocolates suitable for surround (Flake or Kit Kat or similar)
  • 1 x 400g bottle SPAR Squillos Chocolate Hazelnut Spread

Method:

  1. Fashion the pigs out of the plastic icing using SPAR icing sugar on your hands to make it easier to roll. Get creative and add your own personal flair.
  2. Remove the frozen cake from the freezer.  Remove the cling wrap and place on a serving platter that can be frozen.
  3. Working quickly, use the chocolate hazelnut spread to stick the chocolates around the cake to form the barrel.  Use the remaining spread to make the muddy pool on top of the cake that the pigs are going to play in.
  4. Arrange your pigs on the cake and return to the freezer as quickly as possible. Freeze well before attempting to transport.

To transport the cake

  1. Place the cake and plate in a cake box. Place frozen ice bricks in a single layer in the bottom a large cooler box.  Place the cake box in the middle and pack any ice bricks you have around the cake. Fill in any free space with crumpled newspaper.  Close the cooler box and keep closed until needed. If your party venue has a freezer, use it to store the cake until needed,  otherwise keep it in as cool a place as possible.
  2. The length the cake can remain outside the freezer in the cooler box will depend on how much insulation the cooler box has as well as how well it is packed with ice bricks and newspaper. The temperature on the day will also play a factor.  If concerned that the cake will melt, change things up a bit and light the candles as soon as all the guests arrive.

Party Games

Animal Sounds

With this party game, let the children take turns to make their best barnyard animal noises. You can judge and award prizes for the longest, shortest, silliest, quietest, loudest etc. so that at the end everyone is a winner!

Chicken Egg Relay Race

Separate the group into two teams and have them stand in two single-file lines facing the same direction. Place each of the two “eggs” which are actually 2 small white balloons between the knees of the first child in each line. Once the whistle is blown, the race begins. The first child with the egg turns to the second person in line and this person then needs to grasp the chicken egg between their knees. The second child passes it to the third and so on. The team to get the egg to the end the fastest (or without bursting it) is the winner. If the egg drops, that group has to start over.

Pig Races

You'll need to blow up some large pink balloons. With a permanent marker pen, make piggy faces and attach curly pink ribbon to one end of each pig. Choose a start and an end point. Divide the group into two teams and have them stand in a line behind the starting line. The aim of the game is to get the pig from the starting line to the end line and back again, using a fly swatter (swatting the pig balloon). Make sure that you have extra pink balloons just in case any pop.

Find Mrs Chicks Eggs

Hide small colourful plastic or Chocolate Easter eggs (if available) or even hard boiled SPAR hens eggs around a play area, house, or farmyard party area. Tell the story: Poor Mrs. Chick is always forgetting where she laid her eggs and can't find them! How many of Mrs Chick’s eggs can you find?

Farmyard Fun

Sweet Carrots: Wrap green coloured plastic cutlery in orange napkins to create a bunch of sweet carrots.  Tie the top of the napkin with a green ribbon as the “leaves”.
Take Home Gifts: Wrap your take home treats in squares of hessian.  You can even use a coloured stick a tie the bag on the end. Small plastic or metal buckets also make great containers for party loot. Plastic farmyard animals make great gifts for inside the bags/buckets.

Food and Drink

  • Use SPAR bottled water to keep all the farm visitors hydrated.
  • You can put out fresh fruit such as SPAR Freshline apples or baskets of SPAR Freshline strawberries, as an alternative to chips and sweets.
  • Don’t forget that SPAR Deli offer a great range of platters that are suitable for everyone.  All you have to do is pop in to your local SPAR or phone in to order.
  • If you are serving the ice cream sandwich cake at home, take the cake out of the freezer for about 20 minutes before serving. You will not need to do this if transporting to a party venue.
