Toy Trucks

Use plenty of toy trucks and cars to decorate the party area. If you have access to larger toy trucks, consider using them to store the gifts instead of a laundry basket, before gift-opening time.

Construction Zone

Purchase yellow and black “Birthday Zone” or red and white “Caution” tape, and use it to decorate an area. You can also use builder’s helmets and car warning triangles.

Construction Centrepiece

Your child’s toy trucks will make great table decorations! Arrange a group of trucks in the middle of the table as your centerpiece. They make perfect bowls for crisps, popcorn and water bottles etc.

Displaying Goody Bags

Use a small wheelbarrow, a large toy truck or a red wagon to hold the goody bags.
Party Games and Ideas

Box Construction

Get your friends and relatives to save interesting “building material” such as egg boxes, cartons, toilet rolls etc.  A few rolls of tape and they will be building some wonderful creations.

Outdoor Fun

Draw a road on your driveway using chalk, and let the children draw their own trucks and trees on the road. Set up a sandbox where the children can play with toy dump trucks and other toy construction vehicles. Make sure you have clean sand and a few spades, buckets and bulldozers etc.

Make bunting from our specially designed 'construction themed' bunting.

Take It Home

Use plastic Spades or buckets filled with home treats: We used a handful of SPAR Squillos cheese snacks in a spade, covered with a plastic bag and tied with caution tape.

Food and Drink

  • Use SPAR bottled water to keep all the little construction workers hydrated.
  • ‘Workers packed lunches’ to consist of a healthy little sandwich or roll for each child.
  • You can also put out fresh fruit such as SPAR Freshline apples as an alternative to chips and sweets.
  • Don’t forget that SPAR Deli offer a great range of platters that are suitable for everyone.  All you have to do is order.
  • Click here to make your own quick and easy Rectangular Box Cake and decorate it with constuction themed toys. To make the layered cake shown in the photo, use the following tins instead of one large rectangular tin 1 x 23 cm layer cake tin, 1 x 20 cm and 1 x 15 cm in diameter lined with baking paper.

To assemble the Construction Cake

  • 250g SPAR Butter
  • 750g SPAR Icing Sugar
  • 80 ml Cocoa Powder
  • Green and Yellow Food Colouring
  • 1 Chocolate Cake Recipe baked in 3 tins as instructed above
  • Various Chocolate Sweets to form rocks and logs to decorate the cake

Method:

  1. Cream butter and icing sugar using an electric mixer until soft, fluffy and light.  Add a little boiling water if needed.  Spoon out about half a cup of icing.  Add the cocoa to turn the remaining icing into chocolate icing.
  2. Ice the 3 layer cakes together with chocolate icing.  Ice the top and sides of the cakes also using chocolate icing.
  3. Colour half of the remaining icing green and half yellow.
  4. Place green icing into a sandwich bag.  Push it to the corner to form a small piping bag.  Snip the end and use it to add grass on the construction site.
  5. Place yellow icing into a sandwich bag.  Push it to the corner to form a small piping bag.  Snip the end and use it to pipe messages and/or names on the cake.
  6. Arrange a few toy construction vehicles on the cake using them to dig out some of the cake in certain places.
  7. Lastly place edible rocks and logs or toys to decorate the cake.
