N2 Road Trip
Better known as SA’s coastal highway, this national road is 2255km long and runs from Ermelo in Mpumalanga, through KwaZulu-Natal and down to the Eastern Cape before finishing in Cape Town. We look at some of the attractions along the way, particularly places to visit and places to eat.

Hazyview Elephant Sanctuary

God’s Window

The splendour of God’s Window can be described as nothing less than majestic. The panoramic views from the Blyde River Canyon viewpoint put South Africa’s Lowveld on spectacular display. The “green canyon” view also includes the famous Kruger National Park towards the Lebombo Mountains on South Africa’s border with Mozambique. See more >>

Chimp Eden

Established in 2006 by the Jane Goodall Institute, chimpanzees are well taken care of at Chimp Eden. They live in a risk free environment with much needed attention to recover from the trauma they have experienced. Participate in a one hour guided tour at the sanctuary or volunteer and get involved in research. There is even the option of virtually adopting a chimp. KwaZulu-Natal

Hluhluwe Game Reserve

In the north of KwaZulu-Natal, wildlife enthusiasts can experience close-up encounters with Africa’s Big Five at Hluhluwe Game Reserve. St Pizza, St Lucia

Heading south towards eThekwini (Durban), exit at Mtubatuba and make your way to Lake St Lucia, South Africa’s first Natural World Heritage Site. Not only is it a popular holiday destination, it’s also home to St Pizza in Mckenzie Street, which serves up a memorable seafood pizza.

South Beach, Durban

The palm-fringed South Beach on Durban’s beachfront is situated on the southern end of the Golden Mile and is lined with hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and lofty apartments. Grab a bunny chow, chill on the beach, or take a stroll to the magnificent uShaka Marine World.

SkyCar, Durban

Discover Durban from a 106m-vantage point with the SkyCar at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. Price: R55 for adults, R30 for children under 12.

Eastern Cape

East London Aquarium

Continuing south along the coastal highway, you can visit the East London Aquarium. The country’s oldest aquarium was opened in 1931 and allows visitors to view the migration of southern right whales, humpback whales and bottle-nose dolphins through binoculars on the whale deck. Great for children, there is also a breeding colony of African penguins, a shark tank and a rehabilitation pool with injured marine animals, including turtles, seals and dolphins.  See more >>

Port Elizabeth Museum

Give children something to remember by paying a visit to the Port Elizabeth Museum, where a life-sized reconstruction of the giant prehistoric dinosaur known as Algoasaurus is on display. A visit to the 15m skeleton of the last Southern Right whale harpooned in Nelson Mandela Bay is also sure to create some lasting memories for your kids. See more >>

The Garden Route

Hiking Trail, Wilderness

Stretch your legs and take a 7.2km walk along the Duiwe River. Easy going and suitable for any fitness level, this walk will take you on a meander through thick river forest, including a river crossing, and on to the Brownhooded / Half Collared Kingfisher hiking trail. See more >>

Golf, George

If you’re a family that enjoys golf, take a break from the road and enjoy a round at the beautifully manicured George Golf Club. The 72-par course with 18 holes is set in the Garden Route and welcomes visitors daily, with the exception of Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. Booking is essential. See more >>

Cape Town

Breede River Wine Route, Swellendam

Approximately 240km from Cape Town, a turning off the R60 takes you towards Bonnievale and through the Breede River Valley where you will find an abundance of wine farms and tasting rooms. Several wine farms have restaurants and relaxing picnic facilities on the river’s banks.

The area is home to Eagle’s Cliff wine cellar, there the resident winemaker won Diners Club winemaker of the year last year. Platters wine guide highly recommends many of their wines.

Beaches, Cape Town

South Africa is the first country outside of Europe to have Blue Flag Beaches, which means they are tops in terms of water quality, facilities, cleanliness and safety. Clifton Beach, Mnandi Beach and Bikini Beach at Gordon’s Bay hold this honour. Other fantastic beaches include Camps Bay, Llandudno, Noordhoek, Boulders Beach and Muizenberg.

Long Street, Cape Town

The famous stretch that is Long Street, in the center of Cape Town, is lined with clubs, restaurants, bars and live music venues. If you’re looking for a daytime stroll or some night-time jiving, Long Street offers an experience second to none.
