Tortilla Bowls Recipe

A crisp, edible bowl, just waiting to be filled with the ingredients of your choice.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 4 x tortillas
  • 4 tablespoons SPAR sunflower oil

Fillings (choose from below or add your own)

  • SPAR Freshline crisp lettuce
  • SPAR kidney beans canned, drained
  • SPAR cheddar cheese
  • SPAR Freshline Avocado
  • SPAR Freshline tomatoes, diced
  • SPAR Freshline spring onions
  • SPAR Freshline Sweetcorn (Mielies) steamed for +/- 20 minutes and removed from cob using a knife
  • SPAR Freshline coriander
  • SPAR Freshline chillies, chopped
  • Shredded Chicken
  • SPAR sour cream

Recipe Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°c.
  2. Place 4 oven-safe cereal bowls onto a large baking sheet that fits into your oven.
  3. Heat a large frying pan over a medium heat.
  4. Pour 1 tablespoon oil into the pan.
  5. Once hot, place the tortilla in the pan and using tongs swirl the tortilla to coat it in oil. Flip it over and swirl it again. It needs to be coated in oil, on both sides, right away.

  6. Fry the tortilla for 30 seconds per side, allowing it to puff up with large bubbles.
  7. Flip and repeat. Make sure the tortilla isn't turning dark. It should be golden brown.

  8. Move the tortilla to one of the cereal bowls.
  9. Tuck it down into the bottom of the bowl, to create a bowl shape with the tortilla. Take care not to deflate the bubbles. 
  10. Repeat this with the remaining three tortillas.
  11. Once all the tortillas are flash fried and shaped into bowls, bake for +-6 minutes until very crispy.
  12. Take out the oven and set aside to cool.
  13. Fill with your choice of fillings. We did a Mexican filling using lettuce, beans, cheese, avocado, chillies and sour cream.
