Extinguish a flaming pot or pan safely

Dealing with a flaming pot or pan can be dangerous, here’s how to do it correctly.

The biggest mistake is to throw water onto a flaming pot or pan. Adding water to flaming oil or fat only makes things worse. Fire can’t burn without oxygen, so simply eliminate the fire’s air supply. If you’re dealing with a pot, cover it with a lid or plate until the flames have died. With a pan, throw salt or sand onto it and this will douse the fire.
