Making the most of fresh produce

  • A good way to ripen bananas is in a large plastic bag with either an apple or pear.  The gas given off by these fruits promotes the speed of natural ripening.
  • Wrap unripe granadillas or avocado pears in newspaper and leave in a warm place in the kitchen, they'll ripen in no time.
  • Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator - it will keep for weeks.
  • Potatoes will take food stains off your fingers. Just slice and rub raw potato on the stains and rinse with water.
  • Place a slice of apple in hardened brown sugar to soften it .
