Thick Cut Pap Chips Recipe

We’ve taken pap and added some biltong, cheese and spinach before cutting into chips and frying till golden. A perfect accompaniment to shisa nyama.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp (30ml) SPAR olive oil
  • 2 SPAR freshline onions, finely sliced
  • 3 cups of salted water
  • 2 cups (500g) SPAR Maize Meal
  • 1 cup of SPAR freshline spinach, finely chopped
  • 1 cup of SPAR cheese, grated
  • 40g SPAR Tender & Tasty Original Biltong, finely chopped

Recipe Method

  1. Heat the oil in a pan and sauté the onions for 8 - 10 minutes over a low heat or until soft, sweet and translucent. Season with a little salt.
  2. Stir the maize meal and water together and simmer for 30 minutes or until thick and creamy.
  3. Add in the spinach, cheese, biltong and onions and season to taste.
  4. Place in a well-greased baking tray and spread out evenly.
  5. Leave to cool for 30 minutes or until set and slice into thick chips.
  6. Heat a little olive oil in the pan and brown for a few minutes to get colour.
  7. Serve as a side with braaied meat or with a pepper ginger relish as a dip.
