Itumeleng Letoaba

We see you Itumeleng Letoaba, a 46-year-old breast cancer survivor. Diagnosed at 31 with stage 3 breast cancer, Itumeleng was shocked, given her healthy lifestyle and young age.

Her journey began with the discovery of a lump in her right breast. Initially in denial, she sought medical advice when the lump grew and her breast changed shape. Referred to Baragwanath Hospital, she underwent tests confirming the malignancy. Facing chemotherapy and later a mastectomy, Itumeleng struggled with fear and the memory of her aunt who succumbed to stage 2 breast cancer.

Support from her brother, who overcame a life-changing accident, was crucial. He encouraged her to stay positive and fight. Itumeleng embraced this advice, viewing her battle as both physical and mental.

Throughout chemotherapy, Itumeleng maintained normalcy for her son, focusing on healing rather than weight. After six chemo sessions, she opted for a lumpectomy, which was unsuccessful, leading to a mastectomy. Despite the challenges, she completed 34 radiation sessions during the 2010 World Cup. A decade later, cancer returned in her other breast. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, she faced heart failure due to anxiety but recovered with cardiac treatment. She underwent another mastectomy and emerged stronger.

Itumeleng now inspires others through Cancervive. She works alongside a team of dedicated and passionate cancer survivors, counselling the newly diagnosed and spreading awareness across SA on early detection.
