Honey Caramel Oranges Recipe

Orange slices drenched in a honey and cinnamon glaze. A zesty, healthy dessert option for the whole family.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 5 large oranges
  • 1 ml caramel or vanilla essence
  • 50 g SPAR light brown sugar
  • 30 ml honey
  • 100 ml water
  • 2 cinnamon sticks

Recipe Method

  1. Using a zester, peel off thin shreds from the skin of one of the oranges.
  2. Peel all the oranges carefully, ensuring that all the white pith is removed too.
  3. Slice the oranges across the width, into 6 slices each.
  4. Arrange the slices in a shallow heat-proof dish.
  5. In a heavy based saucepan, combine the essence, sugar, honey and water. Stir over medium heat to dissolve the sugar. Once the mixture boils, add in the orange rind and cinnamon. Simmer briskly for 5 minutes, without stirring, to a light golden colour.
  6. Pour over the orange slices. Serve warm or cold.

Hints & Tips

  • For a special touch for entertaining, stir in 25 ml whisky to the honey syrup before pouring onto the sliced oranges. If you do not have a zester tool, step 1 is optional.
  • Serve with vanilla ice cream or 175 ml thick SPAR Double Cream Plain Yoghurt as is, or combined with 15 ml lemon curd.
  • Sprinkle a crumbled ginger-nut biscuit or fudge square over each serving.
