Grilled Winter Fruit Recipe

Using seasonal fruits when they are available is economical and environmentally friendly. This warm, winter dessert is colourful and so easy to prepare!

Recipe Ingredients

  • 1 large oranges, peeled
  • 1 large naartjie, peeled
  • 1 large pink grapefruit, peeled
  • ½ punnet strawberries, rinsed
  • ½ large pineapple, peeled
  • 1 large ripe, firm pear, unpeeled
  • 250 ml SPAR icing sugar

Sauce

  • 175 ml SPAR double cream yoghurt
  • 125 ml SPAR vanilla custard
  • 1 small Turkish Delight chocolate bar, broken into small pieces

Recipe Method

  1. Set oven to GRILL with oven-shelf in centre position.
  2. Prepare fruit: Break the peeled orange, naartjie and grapefruit into their individual segments. Cut pineapple and pear into large chunks.
  3. Combine these fruits in a single layer in lightly greased oven tray.
  4. Sprinkle over half the icing sugar and grill for 10 minutes.
  5. Toss the fruit, add in the strawberries, then sprinkle over the remaining icing sugar. Grill for further 8-10 minutes. A light grill tinge is perfect, but do keep an eye on the fruit near the end of this cooking time.
  6. Serve hot with the accompanying sauce, made by lightly blending the ingredients together.

 

Hints & Tips

Peel the oranges and grapefruit thickly, to completely remove the bitter white pith layer beneath the skin.
