Monkey Gland Sauce Recipe

There’s nothing more South African than Monkey Gland Sauce! Slather it onto a perfectly braaied piece of steak and enjoy with a crunchy salad and some spicy onion rings!

Makes 2 cups

Recipe Ingredients

  • 1 SPAR freshline onion, grated
  • 2 SPAR freshline garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 Tbsp (15ml) SPAR freshline ginger, grated
  • 3 Tbsp (45ml) SPAR Tomato Paste
  • Big pinch of SPAR Chilli Flakes
  • 1 can of SPAR Diced Tomatoes
  • 1 cup (250ml) of SPAR Chutney
  • 3 Tbsp (45ml) Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp (5ml) SPAR Signature Selection Cayenne Chilli Sauce
  • 2 Tbsp (30ml) red wine vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp (30ml) SPAR Brown Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp (30ml) SPAR Olive Oil

Recipe Method

  1. Heat the oil in a pan and fry the onion, garlic and ginger for a few minutes or until soft and sweet.
  2. Add the tomato paste and cook for a minute.
  3. Add the rest of the ingredients and simmer for 30 minutes.
  4. Season to taste and serve with braaied steak.
