Fill up your basket with something fresh and different while supporting local farmers, growers and producers. This farmers’ market is full of quality produce and is a great Saturday morning activity in Howick,KwaZulu-Natal, famous for the majestic Howick Falls.
Situated alongside the Midlands Meander, the Karkloof Market has attracted regular customers from the surrounding area as well as outside visitors since it started in 2007. Founders Andrea Gibson and Kim Drennan saw a need for small growers to support each other.
“It’s important to know where the food we consume is grown,” says Andrea. “A return to the personal interaction between producer and consumer has resulted in a country village atmosphere at the market – it’s as much about shopping as it is about community.”
Not only is there a vast array of fresh seasonal produce on offer, but there are also homemade goodies available. Something truly unique to Karkloof Farmers’ Market is Sue’s nougat, priced between R30 and R35 for about 10 bars is incredible value.
Rita Lea is another familiar face at the market and has been with Kim and Andrea since the start. Her homemade sweet and savoury goods are high in demand with ready-made meals, rusks and sliced ham and beef on offer. Pop by the Wild Bread Co. to stock up on freshly baked bread for the weekend. Peruse the rest of the stalls and pick up mustards, pickles and preserves as the perfect accompaniment to your artisanal bread.
Both young families and folks residing in the surrounding retirement villages fill the communal style tables to relish a delectable breakfast. While you’re enjoying some company and chatting to stallholders, the Wart and Fish Kids Café will make sure that the little ones are looked after and having fun with crafts and activities. If it’s a beautiful day, kids can enjoy the jungle gym just outside the market’s warehouse.
Get to the market early to get the best selection of goods.
