Hockey Equipment Donation Boosts Hockey Development in KZN
30 July 2025
Matthew Sanders, a Grade 12 learner at Ashton International College in Ballito KZN was so enamoured with the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge drive to collect pre-loved hockey equipment for those who need, from the tournament’s 10 regions, that he put out a call on social media, for people to help donate.
His kind act resulted in him collecting equipment from multiple people in his home town, Salt Rock and Umhlali. At this year’s Grand Finals, that took place at St Mary’s DSG in Kloof this weekend, Matthew brought in an incredible 60 hockey sticks, 80 balls and 5 hockey bags which will be donated to schools and learners that need them.
“You never quite know the ripple effect of giving—until you see the smiles, the gratitude, and the joy it brings,” says Les Galloway, Tournament Director. “We would like to thank every team that contributed to our drive, and especially this young man Matthew for his effort in bringing in this “haul”. It will make a real difference to aspiring hockey players.”
The SPAR KZN Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge takes place annually in 10 regions around KZN. Now in its 15th year, the Challenge ended on a high note with St. Marys’ DSG winning the Challenge title this weekend (27 July), and Ashton International College (Ballito) coming a very respectable third place.
