Golden Onion Rings Recipe

These puffy, golden rings are awesome with grilled steak, but equally a treat enjoyed by themselves with a cold beer.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 2 SPAR Freshline onions
  • 1 ½ cups SPAR Freshline buttermilk
  • 1 ¾ cups SPAR cake flour
  • 1 cup beer
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon SPAR Freshline thyme, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon SPAR Freshline parsley, finely chopped
  • SPAR Sunflower oil for frying

Recipe Method

  1. Peel the onions and trim off the ends.
  2. Cut the onions crosswise into 1/2 cm thick slices. Separate the slices to create rings.
  3. Place the buttermilk in a large bowl and add the onions and soak for +- 45 minutes.
  4. Heat +- 3 cups of oil in a large pot.
  5. While the oil is heating, place ¾ cups of flour and the in a bowl.
  6. In another bowl mix together 1 cup flour, beer, salt, pepper, garlic powder, thyme and parsley.
  7. Remove each ring from the buttermilk, letting the excess drip off.
  8. Coat each ring in flour, then dip into the batter.
  9. Fry rings 6 at a time until golden brown, turning.
  10. Repeat until all the onion rings are done.
