Baked Bean Chakalaka Recipe

A classic braai accompaniment. This version is packed with peppery and spicy flavours and is virtually a meal by itself.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 1/8 cup SPAR cooking oil
  • 1 medium SPAR Freshline onion, finely chopped diced
  • 1 clove SPAR Freshline garlic, minced
  • ½ teaspoon SPAR Freshline ginger, finely grated
  • 2 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 SPAR Freshline tomatoes, finely diced
  • 2 cups thinly sliced SPAR Freshline cabbage
  • 1 large SPAR Freshline carrot, grated
  • 1 SPAR Freshline green pepper, diced
  • 1 SPAR Freshline red pepper, diced
  • 1 SPAR Freshline red chilli, finely chopped
  • 1 tin SPAR baked beans in tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup SPAR chicken stock
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Recipe Method

  1. In a large pot over a medium heat, heat the oil.
  2. Add the onion and cook until soft.
  3. Stir in the garlic and ginger and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Add the curry powder and cayenne pepper and continue stirring for about 1 minute.
  5. Then add the tomatoes, cabbage, carrots, peppers and chilli.
  6. Simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Finally add the baked beans and chicken stock and cook for a further 3 minutes.
  8. Season to taste and serve.
