Five everyday tips to for health and happiness

Women’s month is a good opportunity to take stock of where we are in our health as well as our mental and emotional well being.

Often just small, simple adaptations to our routine can make all the difference to all aspects of our well being. Here are five tips that can tee you up for success.

1. WAKE UP EARLY

“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise” – Ben Franklin

Waking up early gives you an amazing start to the day, a sense of quiet and calm. It’s the perfect time to have all to yourself, where you can get organised, enjoy great sunrises and get productive.

2. EXERCISE a minimum of 3 Times a Week

“We found that people who are more physically active have more pleasant-activated feelings than people who are less active”–Amanda Hyde

When you develop this habit over time, it becomes a rituaI and after a period of doing it consistently, it starts to become a key habit that you can’t live without. It will make you feel fantastic and ready to take on other challenges. Best of all, it will help you get good quality sleep at night which will also have a positive knock on effect in other areas of your life.

3. HAVE A HABIT OF DISENGAGEMENT

“The richest, happiest, and most productive lives are characterized by the ability to fully engage in the challenge at hand, but also to disengage periodically and seek renewal”–Loehr and Schwarz, The Power of Full Engagement

This is one of the tough ones, where we need to disengage from the world, especially when it comes to technology. Take the time to switch off, put your phone away and take time out from social media. You will feel better for it!

4. LEARN NEW SKILLS – THE POWER OF NOVELTY AND OUR BRAINS

‘Learning something new is actually a core need for psychological wellbeing. Learning can help us build confidence and a sense of self-efficacy. It can also be a way of connecting with others too,’  Vanessa King, positive psychology expert

‘As human beings, we have a natural desire to learn and progress. Psychologists call it mastery” , she says.

Get curious, get creative, don’t believe those that tell you that ‘old dogs can’t learn new tricks’. Sign up for that cooking course, learn how to master that woodworking skill, take an online course. You will never regret it.

5. HAVE MULTIPLE WAYS TO “WIN” EACH DAY

Setting up small goals for the day will tee you up for success and help you feel fantastic. When these goals become habitual and you accomplish them on a regular basis, you will truly end each day feeling like a winner.
These goals could include doing an extra set of weights at the gym, running a faster kilometre, try to help someone (even if it is showing your grandmother how to use WhatsApp)

Just small goals will help you feel accomplished and contribute greatly to your happiness and well being.
